Lennon Through A Glass Onion is part concert and part biography and celebrates the musical talents of John Lennon performed by local actor Daniel Taylor. Following its Off Broadway New York success, this show has come home to the splendour of the Epstein Theatre.
This two-hour show packs an impressive 36 songs as well as a very well written script by John Waters. First conceived in 1992, Waters and performer Stewart D 'Arrietta wrote and performed this show in Sidney where it was an instant success. Since then, this show has travelled around the globe selling out wherever it goes.
Good performance from Daniel Taylor, with strong vocals accompanied by D 'Arrietta on piano and additional vocals. However, it did feel at times that D 'Arrietta slightly overshadowed Taylor in performance, especially as Taylor's head mic failed completely in the second act and some of his narrative was lost. That might be the reason why Taylor's top notes sounded a little fractured, with only two nights in and a two week run ahead, lets hope that are no more technical 'glitches'.
Although there is dialogue that runs through this show, predominately it is the music that shines, so if it is a play that you are expecting then prepare for a gig kind of feel instead. A good a show as any that have appeared over the years documenting Lennon, and one that I am sure will do well in its home city.
Lennon Through A Glass Onion runs until Friday 29 April. Please visit Epstein website for ticket details:
